Gramadevata Cult in Bangalore

 The Bangalore rural district derives its name from Bangalore and its rural areas like Channapatna, Ramanagaram, Kanakapura, Doddaballapura, Hoskote, Magadi, Devanahalli and Nelamangala. 

Ramanagara consists of Ramanagara, Channapatna, Magadi and Kanakapura. Amongst these Channapatna is old considerably to others. This place was under the Gangas as Mankunda and was the secondary capital of the Gangas. Later it was an important city under Cholas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara Kingdom. The town fort was built by Jagadevaraya in 1580. The Mysore ruler Chamaraja Wodeyar occupied Channapatna in 1630. The Marathas (led by Gopala Hari) occupied the fort in 1759, Hyder Ali occupied it from Marathas and Tipu Sultan renovated it in 1790. Channapatna has three hoblis called Kasaba, Malur and Virupakshapura. 

Devanahalli is mentioned as Devanapura and Devandanahalli. In 1501 Mallabhairegowda of Avati built a fort with consent of Deva feudatory at Devanadoddi and changed the place name as Devanahalli. IN 1747 the Mysore dynasty conquered it and in turn the Marathas conquered it from the Mysore kingdom. Haider and Tipu captured them from the Marathas and renovated them. Devanhalli has four hoblis Devanahalli, Vijayapura, Channarayapatna and Kundana. 

Doddaballapura was a busy commercial center in Hosyala period. It is assumed that Mallabhairegowda could have founded this place also. Doddaballapura was in the hands of Bijapur Sultanate for 40 years. In 1761 Haider Ali annexed the region and passed it to Wodeyars of Mysore. Doddaballapura has five hoblies they are Doddaballapura, Madhure, Doddabelavangala, Sasalu and Tubagere. 

Hoskote was a prehistoric centre, Thammegowda have annexed places like Anekal, Mulbagal and PUnganur. His successors ruled till 1638 and there after the territory was conquered by Bijapur army, it was conferred as Jahagir on Shahji who resided at Bangalore. On the capture of these districts by Mughal army in 1756, Hoskote was taken by the Mysore army but was subdued by the Marathas. It changed hands several times until it was finally annexed by Haider Ali in 1761 AD. Hoskote has five hoblies namely Hoskote, Sulibele, Nandagudi, Jadigenahalli and Anugondanahalli. 

Kanakapura is on the bank of Arakavathi, this was originally under Gangas and later under Cholas. Later the Hoysalas and they changed the name from Kanakapura to Kanakanahalli. Kanakapura has six hoblies Kanakapura, Harohalli, Doddamaralawadi, Kodihalli, Uyyamballi and Sathnur. 

Magadi was founded by Cholas and is described as associated with Mandavyarishi. Immadi Kempe Gowda of Bengaluru had this place under his control during 16th century and the family made Magadi their headquarters in 1638. His successors held it in their possession till 1728 when it was captured by the ruler of Mysore. Kempe Gowda built a small fort. Magadi has five hoblies namely Magadi, Madbal, Thippasandra, Kudur and Solur. 

Nelamangala is mentioned as 'Nelavangala' in records of 1464 AD of Vijayanagara feudatory from Kanasawadi. Nelamangala was transferred to Mysuru Raja along with Thyambagondlu by the Mughals around 1689 AD having acquired from Bijapur. Nelamangala has three hoblies namely Nelamangala, Sompura and Thyamagondlu. 

Ramanagara is situated in a valley surrounded by rocky hillocks. Spread on either bank of Arkavati and old bridge connecting town built by Sir Barry Close, resident of royal court of Mysore. This place was named Closepet. Diwan Purnaiah in 1800 has mentioned this in a persian wall rug. Ramanagara finds its origin from once existed village Ramagiri below Ramadevarabetta. Ramanagara has four hoblies Ramanagara, Bidadi, Kylancha and Kutagal. 

Gramadevatas have figurines into three groups. The divine woman Ishtar type, Divine mother Isis type and the personified Yoni or Baubo type. 

Worship of mother goddess is very old and seems to be one of the earliest forms of worship. Mother goddess is worshiped as Maaramma, Kabballamma, Bisilamma in Bengaluru Rural district.
